Ideas on where to stay and what to do in October on the CA coast.?

About 7 nights. Traveling by automobile. Moderately priced motels/hotels. $60-150 night? Start near LA and travel north to about not too far north of SF. =) Anyone have experience. No kids; just 2 of us. Married 30 years so far.
